RESTORE Project @ Reykjavik University

The RESTORE - SINPAIN database is a repository of patient-specific anatomical models of knee anatomies and different chondral lesions. The database includes more than one hundred different measurements from 47 individuals (25 females, 22 males). They are divided into three categories: 24 degenerative, presenting arthrosis or undergoing total knee prosthesis replacement; 15 traumatic, having acute injures; 8 healthy (control group).

The RESTORE database is a structured set of 3D reconstruction of knee joints taken from different patients and based on their X-ray, MRI and CT data. The user can access data and measurements from an individual entry from the database and cohort data from the analytics section. Additionally, 3D models (STL files) and videos of femoral, tibial and patellar cartilages and bones can be downloaded from the download section.

The RESTORE database is freely accessible and provides a unique set of morphological measurements on bone and cartilage tissues.

Our interest

Please find here some defintions and pictures that might help you to understand a patient file.

Ahlbäck Grading

Lateral Compartment : 0
Normal joint space
Medial Compartment : 1
Joint space narrowing (less than 3 mm)

Ahlbäck Grading

Lateral Compartment : 0
Normal joint space
Medial Compartment : 2
Joint space obliteration (elimination)

Ahlbäck Grading

Lateral Compartment : 0
Normal joint space
Medial Compartment : 3
Minor bone attrition (0-5 mm)

Sclerosis

A thickening of bone seen in joints affected by osteoarthritis.

Bone Attrition

The result of flattening or depression of the articular surfaces, probably as a consequence of bone remodelling.

Osteonecrosis

A generic term referring to the ischemic death of the constituents of bone.

Cysts

Typically spherical or ellipsoidal fluid-filled cavities within the subchondral bone region, related to both altered subchondral bone and cartilage degeneration in patients with osteoarthritis.

Osteophytes

Cartilage-capped bony proliferations (spurs) that most commonly develop at the margins of a synovial joint as a response to articular cartilage damage.

Synovitis – Effusion

Synovitis: inflammation of the synovium.
Effusion: accumulation of excess synovial fluid in or around the knee joint.

Meniscal Pathology : degeneration

Not as acute as a tear, a more gradual onset occurring as we get older.

Meniscal Pathology : protusion

The location of the outer edge of a meniscus is beyond the tibial articular surface.

Meniscal Pathology : rupture

A tear in lateral or medial meniscus due to rotational forces directed to a flexed knee.
